A Level Graphics has been one of the fastest growing subjects at the college for the last few years but in 2011 and 2012 the work of the students has been recognised nationally.
In 2011 Groby Community College Graphics was named in the Good School's Guide for the top performance in the country for the performance of girls at both AS and A2. In October, Mike Lishman the Subject Leader received notification that the department were to receive the award for the second year running. This time the success covered the work of the boys as well. Groby Community College is now nationally recognised as the best in the country for the delivery of A Level Graphics.
What makes winning this award particularly sweet for Graphics is that it is gained for not just the results (which are outstanding by the way) but because of the progress that the students make, as well as the popularity of the subject.
Graphics is just one subject within the hugely creative Art, Design and Technology faculty which consistently delivers outstanding attainment across a range of creative subjects. The faculty have tapped into the creative mind of the Groby students and pulled out amazing success.
Mike Lishman has been responsible for the growth of the Graphics Subject Area over the last few years. By driving the subject in an art and design direction, students have been able to use computer software to explore a range of techniques. Mike takes particular pride in extending the students to often work at levels above their age range. It is not uncommon for students at GCSE to be doing A Level work and for the Advanced students to be completing work at undergraduate level.
The students themselves should be particularly proud of their achievements. Many of the highly successful students at A Level did not take the subject at GCSE and yet have gone onto achieve amazing success.
