On the 12th December 2012, a group of year 13 English Literature students went on a day trip to a reconstruction of the original Globe theatre on London’s cultural South bank.
The visit proved a fascinating insight into the history of the Renaissance England theatre scene, especially as we are studying poetry by John Donne and ‘Measure for Measure’ by Shakespeare! We had our own guide who was particularly animated, taking us onto Bankside helping us to imagine what the frozen river might have looked like 400 years ago, or where we would have gone to see a bear fight. He also took us around the corner to see the foundations of the recently discovered ‘Rose Theatre’ which was also in business during Shakespeare’s time. After an enlightening tour around the Globe and its captivating history, and a look at the exhibition, we were allowed some time of our own along the Thames’ vibrant south bank, for some lunch and an explore.
All in all, with special thanks to Fran Nolan and Amanda Bellamy in the English department, we all had a wonderful day and found the experience truly inspiring.
