Performing Arts

Performing Arts

The Autumn term ended with flurry of Performing Arts activity.  Fame, the college's 21st musical, was a triumphant success.  A simple stage setting relied heavily on the talent of the cast, excellent direction and brilliant musical accompaniment to bring the show to life.  My thanks go out to the committment of the students who often balance exam pressure against hours of rehersal.  Thanks also go out to Mr Rayner, Miss Smith, Ms Bridge and Mr Coltman for their brilliant efforts in bringing Fame to the Groby stage.

David Wilson Grant

David Wilson Grant

In December the college were thrilled to receive notification from the David Wilson foundation that we have been granted £80,000 to develop facilities in order to build an area to enable us to deliver construction skills.  By September 2013 we hope to be able to deliver basic bricklaying, carpentry and painting and decorating as part of our Flexible Learning curriculum.  These are not the usual skills you would find in a secondary school but it will help us to continue to broaden our provision for some students who want to pursue vocational skills.  Our thanks go out to renowned businessman and local builder David Wilson who came to visit the college in September and awarded the college the grant on the basis of this visit.

Bad Weather - January Exams

Bad Weather during the January Exam period

Exams will take place if the college can physically open, therefore students should always attempt to get into college where practicable and safe.

Groby's Got Talent

Groby's Got Talent

Just prior to the Fame production, a wide display of skill could be seen in the Groby's Got Talent final.  This was organised as a House Competition and was won by Sami Kissai representing Beacon House.  It was wonderful to welcome back to the college Kellie Valance (ex-student) and now professional singer and dancer.  Kellie brought her professional experience to the panel as well as demonstrating to our budding stars what they can achieve on the stage if they want to.

Students meet Olympic Silver Medalist

On Friday 29th June, myself and Lucy Whitfield were asked to represent the college alongside Mr Coles at an Olympic and school sport conference at Loughborough University. The day started with an introduction from one of the lecturers at the university, outlining what we would be doing over the course of the day and about what Loughborough University was doing to support the Olympics.
