Meet our Governors

Mr Rob Coles,
Principal

rob coles June 2014

I have served on the Governing Body since starting at the college as Principal in September 2011. I also serve as a Governor for Brookvale High School which is part of our campus and our Umbrella Academy Trust. Working closely across both schools means that we can provide a high quality learning experience for all of the students.

My central belief is that the Governing Body are there to hold me as Principal and the rest of the college to account for the decisions that we take and outcomes we achieve for the young people. I believe that the Governing Body should be fully informed at every level so that they can ask the right questions at the right time.

Current activity:
I help convene the full Governing Body but also sit on all the sub committees including the:
• Strategic Committee
• Finance, Premises and Resources
• Teaching, Learning and Achievement
• Student Wellbeing

We also run a group of Post 16 Student Governors Committee. The students attend the Full Governing Body meetings in rotation and meet each half term to scrutinise the work of the college.

Mrs Helen Brown,
Chair of Governors

I became a Vision Trust appointed governor in September 2013. I was elected as Vice Chair of Governors at the same time. Prior to becoming a governor I taught at the college for 24 years. My teaching career spans 40 years. I retired in August of this year and by being a governor of the same school I have maintained links with the college and with education in general. I have represented the Senior Leadership Team on both the Finance and Premises committee and the Teaching and Learning committee for a good number of years. In my final role at the college as Director of Post 16 I started with Mr Coles the first Student Governor Committee.

I served as chair of governors for my children's primary school for six years. Both my children attended Brookvale High School and Groby College and are successful in their chosen careers.

I hope to assist and support both the schools on the campus in our goal to be “outstanding”. I feel my background will help me ask the right questions to move this college and the campus forward. I look forward to this new challenge.

Current activity:
• Vice Chair of Governors
• Member of Governors’ strategic planning group, Teaching, Learning
and Achievement committee, Joint Governor Steering group
• Link Governor to Humanities Faculty

I retired from teaching at Groby Community College in 2012 and have remained in contact with the college ever since. Sometimes teaching and helping with College trips but mostly working with the College’s Young Enterprise Teams. I am pleased to have joined the Governing Body in November 2013.

My interest in Education has continued. I currently tutor Post Graduate training teachers at the University of Leicester and believe that my work with these future teachers has been enhanced through being in touch with the realities of school life at Groby College.

As a member of the Governing body of the college I see my role as contributing to and ensuring the best possible educational provision for all the young people who attend the College and to support the Principal and staff in achieving this goal.

Current activity:
• Teaching and Learning committee

Mrs Tracey Kinsley,
Member Governor

I applied to become a Governor at Groby Community College in June 2009. I soon became Chair of the Teaching, Learning and Achievement Committee as I am very interested in teaching, learning and raising achievements.

I am an Assistant Principal for a large further education College in the city and prior to this I held various posts such as Quality and Student Manager, Programme Area Manager and Lecturer in Graphic Design. I have also served as a part time Ofsted Inspector and I am very interested in education in general and for all ages.

Becoming a Governor within a 14-18 environment was important to me because I hadn't experienced this before and I wanted to find out more. Being a Governor has enabled me to contribute ideas, steer the Teaching, Learning and Achievement Committee and be involved in monitoring progress.

In October 2011 I became a Parent Governor as my son attends the College.

I became a Governor to ensure all of our sons and daughters get the best possible education from Groby. I will do that by supporting and challenging the Principal, teaching staff and fellow Governors.

I am highly aspirational for our children and our college.

I consider my role to be the voice of parents who cannot or do not want to sit on the Governing Body.

I want Groby to accelerate its progress so our children receive the best possible outcomes.

I have a business background which has also involved professional governance and I will use these skills for the benefit of Groby.

Mrs Julie O'Connor,

I am delighted to have been appointed as a Parent Governor of Groby Community College and as a parent of two students, who are currently attending the college, I appreciate the importance of an effective and inclusive learning environment. I am an Assistant Educational Psychologist, specialising in Autism Spectrum Disorder, and as such have knowledge and insight to the special needs of many differing children and young people groups, and the complexities that many of our young people present, both at home and in the school setting.

In my spare time, I also work for the Leicestershire Youth Offending Service, acting as a short term intervention volunteer for young people aged 8 to 17 years who have become known to Leicestershire Police. My work in educational psychology, and for the Youth Offending Service, has enabled me greater understanding of the personal, social and environmental pressures to which our young people are exposed. My aim, as both a parent and as a professional, is to bring my own experience and knowledge to the Governing Body, and further enhance the excellent work of the Groby Community College leadership team and staff.

Current activity:
• Member of the Student Wellbeing Team
• Link Governor for Pupil Premium

Mr Michael Rule,

As a resident of Groby and an ex-student of Groby Community College, it is a pleasure to be a member of the Governing Body. I wanted to join a Governing Body so I could contribute to the standards, achievement and development of a secondary school, and this role allows me to do so particularly for the students of my local area and the College which provided so well for me when I was a student. I am a teacher of Food and Music and Head of Year at a Leicester City secondary school. I aim for my professional knowledge in the classroom and departmental and pastoral leadership experience to support the Teaching, Learning and Achievement committee as well as my link to the SEN department.

Current activity:
• Member of the Teaching, Learning and Achievement Committee
• Link Governor for SEN

Mrs Katie Rush,
Member Governor

I have served as a Member Governor at Groby Community College since becoming Headteacher of Brookvale High School in 1996. I am pleased to say that the Principal at Groby Community College has always served on Brookvale's Governing Body as well. My interest is in helping the two schools on our campus to work closely together for the benefit of our young people.

Before joining Brookvale I worked at various Leicestershire schools including John Ferneley High School, Roundhill Community College, South Charnwood High School and Wreake Valley Community College.

Current activity:
• I serve on the Student Wellbeing Committee and the Governor Strategy Group.

Prof Jacqui Shaw,
Member Governor

I am passionate about good education and I believe it is vital that this can be accessed locally. I applied to become a Governor at Groby Community College in Autumn 2010 having been Chair of Governors at Thornton Community Primary School for the previous 9 years whilst my two sons were there. As well as Chair of Governors I was the Chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee, the SEN Governor and Chair of the Performance Management Committee, so I have wide previous governor experience. I am currently a member of the Teaching, Learning and Achievement Committee at Groby.

I am a Senior Lecturer in Cancer Studies at the University of Leicester and I teach science and medical undergraduate students and postgraduate masters students. I also supervise PdD and MD students. I have been an external examiner for a taught Masters course at Imperial College and I act as an external examiner for PhD and MD degrees at Russell Group Universities. I am leading a 5 year programme of research in breast cancer funded by Cancer Research UK and I am one of only 4 people in the Univerisity to hold this top level of funding. I also have a number of other active research grants and I am involved with public engagement and outreach both for the local charity Hope Against Cancer and for the Cancer Research UK.

Becoming a Governor at Groby Community College was a natural move for me as my children moved up from primary, to high school and then to college. Being a Governor at Groby has enabled me to share my previous Governors experience and my academic experience.

Current activity:
• Member of the Teaching, Learning and Achievement Committee (TLA)
• I am the Link Governor for Science

Training:

I attended an update re the new Ofsted framework (1/2 day) in 2012.

I have previously attended the Governor Induction programme as well as training for Chairs of Governors, SEN Governors, and performance management run by the Governor Development Service.

Mr Lee Shellard,

Profile to follow

Miss Amelia Hammond,
Teacher Governor

amelia hammond

I was appointed as the second staff governor in October 2013. I started teaching at Groby Community College in 2009, teaching predominantly German alongside some Life Skills and RS. Before starting in teaching, I worked for four years in the international finance industry for several German and Swiss companies in various locations in Europe. I am keen to be involved in new initiatives in the school and to make sure that the school is functioning at a high level. By joining the governing body I can not only be a driving force in these positive changes, but also represent other staff members and their views. I am convinced that Groby is an outstanding school and that our values and aims are sound, and I want to continue to support the mission to embed good practices into all day to day teaching and provide a sound education for all students that attend our school.

Current activity:
• Teaching and Learning
• Student Wellbeing

Mrs Bryony Leonard,
LA Governor

bryonyleonard

I was appointed as the Local Education Authority Governor in December 2013.  I elected to join the Finance and Planning Committee as I have an interest in how schools and colleges develop and how they face the constant changes to their operating procedures in light of Government changes and reform.

My current role is with a national Awarding Organisation managing a suite of qualifications for both Apprentices and people employed within the sector who want to develop their skills and knowledge.  Previously I have worked for a County based Further Education College managing their Apprenticeship provision which included performance against contract and also for 2 private training providers within the County.

The opportunity to become a Governor in a 14-18 environment was of great interest to me as I see this as being an opportunity to develop my own knowledge to understand the challenges faced by all parents and children when thinking ‘what next’.  I feel that my previous experience will assist the College in maintaining the current high standards and achievements and help it move forward as policy and focus changes.

Current activity:
Member of the Finance and Planning Committee (FPC)

Mr Peter Dungworth,
Clerk to the Governors

I have been the Clerk to the Governing Body since April 2009 and also act as Clerk at Brookvale High School and Martinshaw Primary. I have been a Clerk for over 30 years, and seen many changes in the education system.

My main task is to organise the business of the governing body and to act as a source of advice on practice and procedures.

I have lived in Groby for 25 years and my own children came through the schools in the village, including the College.
