To find out if a graduate career in teaching is right for you, come and spend some time in BOSGRO cluster schools on our school experience programme.
It is only by going into schools that you will get that sense of whether teaching really feels right – and whether you think you can do it. Although relevant experience is not a formal prerequisite to get onto an initial teacher training (ITT) course, it is a supporting factor in the application process. Not surprisingly, it demonstrates your commitment to the profession and recruiters will feel reassured that you have a realistic view of what teaching is like. A further plus is that you will have something concrete on which to base your answers on at interview.
The Groby school experience programme offers you the chance to spend time at Groby and the other schools in BOSGRO partnership. You will have the opportunity to:
- gain valuable work experience
- experience a range of teaching methods
- study how students learn
- gain insight into how students are inspired by our experienced outstanding teachers

Careers advice and guidance in years 10 and 11 at Groby Community College
The main aims of our careers programmes throughout your child’s time with us are;
• To empower young people to plan and manage their own futures and so progress to the next level of education or training
• Provide comprehensive, impartial information, advice and guidance
• Raise aspirations
• Actively promote equality of opportunity and challenge stereotypes
We achieve this using a range of strategies.
Life Skills programme
Students follow dedicated modules in careers education in both year 10 and year 11. In both cases the programmes encourage students to reflect on their strengths and interests, consider the range of options available at 16 and beyond and plan to achieve their future goals, both in the short and long term.
The year 10 programme begins in May, the year 11 programme in early October.
Assemblies and Speakers
Running in parallel with the Life Skills programme will be a series of assemblies to help students focus on the key decisions they need to make and tasks they need to complete. Sometimes these will be functional in the sense that they are simply designed to highlight key events and deadlines for students. However external speakers will be used to raise awareness of the many opportunities available as well as help our student’s to aspire to areas they may previously have not been aware of or discounted.
Interview Technique
As part of the Life Skills programme in year 11, all students will have the opportunity to take part in a mock job or college interview. The students are interviewed by a mixture of local employers and FE college staff and they provide each student with detailed individual feedback to help when it comes to a real interview! In 2014, the interviews will take place on Thursday 20th November.
Future Pathways Evening
This is a key event in the evening on Thursday 9th October 2014, where a range of education and training providers come in to college to talk to parents and students about the opportunities they offer. The event coincides with the year 11 Life skills programme, ‘Planning for our future’, dovetailing with lessons focussed on completion of application forms and letters, interview practice and careers research / action planning, so is a great chance for students to really focus on the key decisions they need to make and in very practical terms, how to achieve those goals.

College Open Evenings
As well as the Groby College Post-16 Open Evening which focuses on the courses on offer here at post-16 (Thursday 6th November 2014), all the local FE colleges will give students the chance to see the courses they offer during the Autumn Term in their own open day/evening events. As soon as dates are announced they will be promoted through Careers pages on our website, as well as via the school bulletin.
Careers Advisors
Our link careers advisor is Fay Wilson and she will be meeting with students throughout year 10 and 11 to help them make informed, impartial decisions about their future. She has many years experience of working with youngsters, as well as a detailed knowledge of provision both locally and nationally. All students will be introduced to Fay Wilson via the Life Skills programme and find out precisely what kind of support she can offer.
Vacancies
Occasionally companies contact us directly to promote vacancies on courses or apprenticeship schemes. When this happens they will be promoted on both the college website and the school bulletin, so please check this page regularly for updates.
